Description Title: Assistant Specialist (Arthropod Identification and Monitoring) Position number: 84427 Hiring Unit: College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences Location: Komohana, Hilo, HI Date posted: October 25, 2023 Closing date: January 31, 2024 Monthly Type: 11-month Tenure Track: Tenure-track Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Temporary/Permanent: Permanent (15% Instruction, 45% Research, 40% Extension) The Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) invites applicants for a tenure track position in Arthropod Identification and Monitoring at the Assistant Specialist level beginning Aug 1, 2024.
The department seeks candidates whose applied research experience is centered on identification, monitoring and management of arthropod pests of specialty crops and invasive species.
Duties and Responsibilities: Coordinate a statewide (with emphasis on Hawaii island) Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for the ornamental industries including floriculture, foliage, nursery and landscape crops.
Serve as an IPM program advisor and coordinator.
Develop Best Management Practices from biological to cultural management options, novel prevention strategies and innovative research for new invasive arthropod pests through multidisciplinary/ interdisciplinary/ trans-disciplinary collaboration with fellow faculty, extension agents, Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) and other agencies to coordinate effective and efficient protocols of rapid response and quarantine measures to new pest invasions.
Deliver information to stakeholders, provide insect identification training and teaching materials, and publish extension publications.
Support ADSC’s public services on arthropod pests identification through regular consultation and guidance and information sharing in mutually beneficial efforts.
Develop and teach an undergraduate or graduate level course that fits with the needs of the department and contributes to an internationally recognized Program.
Mentor graduate students in Entomology, take turns teaching a seminar in the Entomology Graduate Program, publish peer-reviewed papers.
Coordinate with CDFA and maintain the nursery certification program.
Support Extension Agents with programming and content related to the subject matter expertise through program planning meetings, individual consultation, site visits with clientele, speaking at educational programs, and in other educational roles.
Contribute to program assessment, advise, and mentor graduate students, and develop a successful applied research program in IPM and arthropod identification.
Secure extramural funds that complement the extension and research programs.
Minimum qualifications: Master’s Degree in Entomology or related field and in addition to the Master’s Degree, 30 credits of graduate study from a college of a university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position involved.
At least three (3) years of research experience in IPM at the next lower rank or its equivalent.
Demonstrated ability as a teacher.
Demonstrated scholarly achievement in research and extension.
Poise and experience in meeting and conferring with others.
Understand and support the University Land Grant Mission and core values of the College’s mission and vision.
Desirable qualifications: PhD.
In Entomology or related field.
Research experience in arthropod identification and IPM.
Post-doctoral research experience in arthropod identification and management.
Teaching and outreach experience at the university level.
Demonstrated ability to identify a wide variety of arthropods.
Demonstrated ability to conduct IPM research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of clienteles, using both traditional methods (e.
g.
, oral presentations, and extension bulletins) and digital/online methods (e.
g.
, websites, and social media).
Demonstrated ability to conduct an active extension program.
Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding through multidisciplinary collaborations.
Demonstrated ability to offer distance education course(s).
