We are seeking qualified candidates for a two-year Associate position, to be based ‎in Tafuna, American Samoa.
Our ideal candidate will be a recent graduate who has either finished a clerkship or has 1-3 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
Jones & Associates is a full-service law firm and the Associate will be expected to assist with and manage a broad range of cases from probate matters through commercial litigation.
This candidate must be willing to act independently and will be required to make court appearances.
The Candidate must be willing to live on a remote tropical island in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean (5hrs south of Hawaii by Passenger Jet).
In order to succeed here you will need to enjoy the outdoors (hiking, diving, snorkeling, fishing, surfing and/or sailing).
There are no malls or resorts and few restaurants: just rain forest, beaches and the opportunity to travel throughout the Pacific.
It is anticipated that you will be able to leave the office by 4pm (with few exceptions) so you can enjoy the island with family and friends.
It is encouraged that the Associate take time to visit other Islands in the Region including Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand which are short and relatively inexpensive flights from Pago Pago.
*Compensation:* Starting Salary for this position is $80,000/yr based on meeting the minimum billable hour requirement of 1,000hrs per year (4 billable hours per day).
Associate will receive compensation for work performed in excess of the minimum billable requirement and will receive two weeks paid vacation and sick leave as part of the compensation package.
(All residents of American Samoa receive free medical coverage through Medicare/Medicaid).
*Associates are routinely required to:* * Provide thorough factual and legal research and analysis; * Draft necessary pleadings, agreements and documents with efficiency and clarity; * Manage projects from commencement to closing; * Competently and professionally communicate with clients and supervising attorneys; * Complete tasks efficiently; * Appear in Court and at Depositions *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:* * Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; * Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines; * Strong organization and matter management skills; * Ability to work professionally and effectively with clients, partners and support staff; * Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team; * Clear and effective drafting skills; * Exceptional project management skills; * Strong negotiating skills; and * Strong Litigation Skills.
*Minimum Qualifications:* Juris Doctor; licensed to practice law and in good standing in any US Jurisdiction and willing to be admitted to practice in the Territory of American Samoa.
*Starting Date:* The starting date is ideally no later than January 31, 2024.
However, there is some flexibility due to the unique undertaking of relocating to American Samoa.
