Duties: Serves as the advisor for the UH Hilo student newspaper Ke Kalahea.
Serves as the primary resource regarding student publication functions, including ethics and various aspects related to newspaper production.
Provides support for the student newspaper members, including advising and assisting students in meeting their responsibilities as stated in the Board of Student Publications Charter and By-Laws.
Advises newspaper management in developing and implementing responsible editorial policies and procedures to meet University requirements and professional standards.
Provides training/development sessions for newspaper members, including but not limited to, ethics, rules & responsibilities of student newspaper; daily operations of publications; fiscal responsibilities & operations of the publications; leadership and team management; promotion and marketing of publications.
Assists the Editors-in-Chief of Ke Kalahea to develop positive relationships with the Board of Student Publications (BOSP) Provides input to the BOSP on policies and procedures that govern the relationship between the student newspaper and the BOSP.
Develops and provides specific skills training, i.
e.
, news writing, literary editing, and layout design, for the student newspaper members as needed or requested.
Educates the college and greater community regarding the constitutional right of the student newspaper to conduct free investigations into matters that affect their community and to print without fear of restraint or censorship.
Builds and nurtures positive relationships with relevant academic programs, particularly Journalism and English, to maximize students’ participation in newspaper activities and to promote students’ ability to integrate classroom learning with a newspaper publication.
Maintains a current file reporting all required training activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or Public Relations and two (2) years of professional experience with responsibilities for advising a collegiate student newspaper, developing training activities for student newspaper members, creating student newspaper policies and procedures or equivalent education/training or experience.
Functional knowledge of student newspaper production, management and promotion.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in advising collegiate student newspapers on policies, skills, terminology, technology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, University rules, regulations, and systems associated with Chartered Student Organizations and student life programs.
Functional knowledge of journalism ethics.
Functional knowledge of developing and managing a student newspaper budget.
Proficiency in writing, editing, and proofing techniques.
Desirable Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the range of issues that may commonly occur in co-curricular programs, services, and activities.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word-processing software.
Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse collegiate environment, with campus and community organizations and programs, as well as with publications team members.
At least two(2) years of active publication experience in a professional setting.
Demonstrates commitment to working as a team with students and staff.
Practical knowledge of UH policies, procedures, and guidelines related to Chartered Student Organizations and student-fee funded co-curricular programs, services, and activities.
