Duties and Responsibilities: Serves as a confidential student resource as pertains to advocacy and UH Hilo’s response to sexual and gender-based violence and misconduct.
Provide crisis response, advocacy, and referrals to student victims of all forms of gender-based violence, including, but not limited to, sexual assault, interpersonal violence, stalking, sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct.
Maximize student safety, retention and success through policy and prevention education and programming.
Design or obtain and implement culturally competent, intersectional prevention and bystander intervention curriculum as needed.
Support and advocate for student victims throughout the various stages of reporting and adjudicating complaints.
Engage in outreach to bridge gap in services between campus and local community and across the UH System.
Assess student needs and work with faculty to identify and implement interim measures and/or support services for victims.
Serve as initial contact for students who need support but are not prepared to file a formal complaint.
Notify students of rights and responsibilities under EP1.
204, and explain the various options for reporting as well as the accompanying procedures.
Meet with faculty, employers, extracurricular advisors, etc.
as needed to ensure equal access to educational environment.
Ensure that university, state and federal process and standards are being upheld.
Recommend best practices for policies and procedures pertaining to victim services.
Submit reporting on aggregate data in order to identify trends, plan for future education and outreach.
Maintain confidentiality of students reporting issues.
Participate in mandatory training on a regular basis as identified by UH leadership.
Collect data at educational events.
Evaluate impact of education efforts on campus climate.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with university departments and programs.
Assess non-academic needs of students and make appropriate on and off campus referrals to meet physical and mental health needs.
Develop and maintain working relationships with key community stakeholders; collaborate on programming as needed.
Serves as resource to administration, faculty and staff as it pertains to the University's responsibilities regarding prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence and misconduct.
Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Gender and/or Women's Studies or related field and 1 year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for creating and facilitating training AND serving as a victim advocate; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the necessary education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in victim advocacy and university programming and education demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with Title IX/VAWA.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the University setting.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of applicable state and federal laws.
At least six months of experience working with students in a university or college setting.
Demonstrated record of working with diverse populations.
Demonstrated ability to identify and respond to the needs of students who have experienced or report sexual misconduct.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.
Proven record of effective communication.
Successful record of implementing prevention education programs.
Awareness of prevention education and victim advocacy best practices in a University setting.
Evidence of successful completion of victim advocate training.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience working with Native Hawaiian and/or indigenous students.
Experience using UH Hilo data tracking systems such as Banner and STAR.
Familiarity with equal opportunity principles.
Familiarity with University of Hawaii policies and procedures to respond to sexual misconduct.
Possession of a Master's Degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Gender and/or Women's studies or related field.
